Introduction To Ground-Penetrating Radar

GPR

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) device is a versatile tool.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a very useful tool to use if you are planning on carrying out construction projects. GPR has many uses and it can also be used in paleontology and archaeology, making it versatile. However, you may have heard of ground-penetrating radar, but maybe you don’t know exactly what it is or how it works. There are many things to learn about GPR so here’s an overview of the technology and its uses.

What Is GPR?

Ground-penetrating radar is a geophysical technique, which means it uses pulses to create an image of what lies beneath the earth’s surface. GPR uses electromagnetic radiation to make this image and does so in a way that is not environmentally destructive. Though this technology may sound like a more recent innovation, something similar to it was actually patented in 1910, which makes it over one hundred years old. In the 1970s, the GPR process became more refined, and over time, it has evolved even more. Now it is commercially available, making it accessible to the general public.

How Is It Used?

GPR has many uses in fields like construction, paleontology, and archaeology. Because of its ability to allow people to distinguish what’s below the earth’s surface without destroying anything, many people use it to carry out their work. One such way people use GPR is to inspect bridge decks. GPR allows for an image of the bridge’s structure to be produced, which can reveal any structural issues the bridge may have. This is helpful because it can help identify areas of the bridge that can be repaired. Another way ground-penetrating radar is used is for inspecting roads. GPR scans over twenty feet deep into the earth’s surface, highlighting any areas that need to be repaired.

GPR can also be used if you are planning on doing an excavation project. If you are working on some property that needs to excavated but know there are potentially hazardous materials beneath the ground’s surface, GPR can help you map out the area and guide your efforts.

GPR Scanning with Concrete Visions

Concrete Visions has over 12 years of experience and expertise in concrete scanning and we know how to detect any problems lurking beneath the surface. We use ground penetrating radar accurately and expertly and are familiar in many other methods that can be used when appropriate like concrete x-ray and electromagnetic conductivity. We are also very familiar with the latest construction safety techniques and train all of our workers to do their work quickly, accurately, and safely.  If you would like to learn more about how we can help you, give is a call at (410) 766-2210 or visit us online.
