Electromagnetic, otherwise known as EM, uses a transponder that transmits AC current into a steel pipe while ground penetrating radar, or GPR, uses a transmitter and receiver. With EM, that method requires that the lines be made of an electrically conductive material because it primarily works with an electrical current. The wand-like receiver picks up the electromagnetic field surrounding the utility line, which is then transmitted and traced onto a map for further analysis and reference.
