Let Photoluminescence Be Your Guide

photoluminescence

Photoluminescence is a great safety technology because it doesn’t require a power source to operate.

When it comes to keeping your workplace safe and your commercial property up to code, photoluminescence is the perfect technology for you. What exactly is photoluminescence and how can you use it throughout your business?

What is Photoluminescence?

Photoluminescence is typically used in fire safety situations to keep everyone able to see and safely evacuate. Photoluminescence is basically a fancy word for “glow in the dark” signs that light up exits and hallways without needing to be plugged in. They are especially useful in fire situations because their bright glow can be seen even through smoke and debris. Photoluminescent material is made of phosphors that work by absorbing light energy when they are exposed to light. The light energy activates the phosphor molecules and “stores” the energy. The phosphor molecules then release the energy through the glow-in-the-dark we all recognize.

How Can You Use Photoluminescence?

There are many different ways that you can use photoluminescence in your business and even at home. Your kids probably already use photoluminescence in the form of the cute glow in the dark stars that line their bedroom ceiling, fun t-shirts or socks, and even other room décor. When it comes to keeping your customers and employees safe, photoluminescence is typically used in exit signs, floor strips, or arrows to put on the floor to guide the way to safety in the event of a power outage or fire. The main benefit of photoluminescence is that it doesn’t exhaust your building’s power or raise your energy bill at all. Because the photoluminescent material is chemical, it doesn’t need to be plugged in or have batteries changed. Instead, regular inspections will suffice.
