Follow these tips when locating utilities underground.
Utility locating is a challenging process as a result of the numerous utility lines running underneath our feet every day. On top of the usual suspects, like water pipes and gas lines, there are now tons of buried fiber cables and telecommunications lines that lurk beneath the ground. To protect your business, your crew, and your bottom line, you need to complete the utility locating process thoroughly using GPR.
Before You Scan
The very first step of the utility locating process should be contacting the state or municipal office where you plan on digging to ask about the area that will be excavated. Someone will visit the site and mark where all of the utility lines are located. While this is sometimes enough, it’s always a good idea to follow up with GPR scanning to ensure all of the lines were properly marked. In some cases, privately-owned lines are not marked on the state’s copy of what should be underneath the pavement.
Use GPR Scanning
Locating underground lines using GPR scanning is similar to finding the right radio station you’re looking for! When scanning for a radio station, each station is transmitting a different signal (the numbers that show up on the dial). The radio you use is designed to pick up on those signals and interpret them so that you can tune in. This is similar to GPR scanning, which picks up on lines beneath the ground using imaging since every line buried beneath the ground will also have a different charge or signal that it emits.
Choose the Right Day
Our last tip for utility locating is to choose the right day to get it done. Ground conditions have a great effect on any potential interference or scanning discrepancies. Soil and clay are very conductive since they are slightly moist. Dry soil can cause problems because the signal will not travel as deeply into the ground, which can cause distortion.
