Ground-Penetrating Radar, otherwise known as GPR, is a technology that uses high frequency radio signals to receive and store data. The signals are transmitted into the ground and returned to the receiver. The depth to which GPR technology can reach depends on the material of the subsurface and the frequency of the GPR’s antenna. With that in mind, ground-penetrating radar can range from a few inches underground to thousands of feet. Once the data has been stored, a computer will then determine the depth and location. If you’re interested in GPR for your concrete project, here’s what to know about this advanced construction technology.
Data Collection
There are different types of GPR equipment. The type that is used for any particular project depends on the depth and size of the target that is being located. The reflected signals that the radar unit emits and receives could be as high as a thousand per second. A GPR professional will then view and interpret these signals for immediate analysis.
Data Analysis
Speaking of data analysis, one of the most impactful factors is the different materials that the ways travel through. Soil, concrete, fill material, debris, and different amount of water saturation will all affect the GPR waves and therefore, the data interpretation. At that point, the GPR professional will be tasked with interpreting these waves and images as they appear on the computer screen.
Concrete Usage
To penetrate concrete, the type of GPR equipment necessary is known as high frequency. Professionals usually use this type when they are looking for rebar, conduits, and post-tension cables imbedded in the concrete. Line scans determine the thickness of the concrete. In addition, the grid format is used to produce a map of the targets located within the concrete. With the grid, a GPR professional will then be able to determine the depth of objects based on virtual slices and 3D images of the map.
GPR Scanning with Concrete Visions
Concrete Visions has over 12 years of experience and expertise in concrete scanning and we know how to detect any problems lurking beneath the surface. We use ground penetrating radar accurately and expertly and are familiar in many other methods that can be used when appropriate like concrete x-ray and electromagnetic conductivity. We are also very familiar with the latest construction safety techniques and train all of our workers to do their work quickly, accurately, and safely.
