A sinkhole can be disastrous. Sinkholes are holes that form in the ground by water drainage or erosion. They can vary in size and occur either slowly over time, or pop up without a moment’s notice. Although some places are naturally more prone to sinkholes than others, sinkholes are still capable of appearing anywhere around the world. It is important that when a sinkhole is noticed, that it is immediately avoided and be dealt with by professionals. If you notice any of the major signs of a sinkhole, be ready to alert the proper authorities.
Sunken areas
A noticeable warning sign of a sinkhole that you can look out for are sunken areas, or areas that are considerably lower than their surroundings. Sometimes, these sunken areas take on a large, circular shape over a patch of either the earth or concrete. You may also notice either a sudden or gradual lowering of patches of your property that are lower than the rest of your property, which would indicate that a sinkhole may be present.
Cracks
Visible cracks in the ground are another clear sign that a sinkhole is present is on your property. This might come in the form of your foundation cracking, or maybe even drooping. Additionally, you might notice that there might be cracks in the concrete, pavement, or streets around where a sinkhole is forming that clearly are not the result of something else, like construction for example. So, if you find yourself noticing any strange or unusual cracks, then it is important to take note that these are warning signs of a potential sinkhole and will need to be dealt with.
Neighbors having similar problems
If you have spoken to your neighbors recently and they mention that they have encountered sinkholes on their property, or even suspect that sinkholes may be present, then odds are, you may have a similar problem. If there is nearby sinkhole activity, then there is a reason to suspect you may also have sinkholes present on your own property since some areas tend to experience sinkholes more commonly than others. Just to be safe, you should have a professional inspect your property for potential sinkholes.
