What is It?
Ground-penetrating radar is a geophysical method that uses a radar pulse that is sent into the ground to create an image of the subsurface. This method is non-destructive and uses electromagnetic radiation to create an image. The first patent for a system similar to what we know today as GPR was first submitted in 1910. The development for a more sophisticated process didn’t arise until the 1970’s, but since then its applications have been vast and GPR equipment is now available to be sold commercially.

As stated before, GPR can be used in the studies of paleontology and archaeology but it can also be used when it comes to increasing safety on roadways, for deck inspections and for locating underground storage due to its non-invasive penetrative capabilities.
For roadway inspection: GPR can determine the condition of a roadway to determine what may need to be repaired or replaced. After a heavy snow or other natural event it is possible that, with the GPR’s ability to scan up to 24 feet deep, that it can detect damage in the roadway.
