Ground-penetrating radar, more commonly known as GPR, uses radio signals to find structures beneath concrete so that they can be avoided while drilling. It can be a confusing piece of technology to those who do not quite understanding it yet. As standard for any piece of technology that is misunderstood, there are plenty of myths and rumors surrounding GPR about how it works and what it can and cannot do. Here are some of the more common myths as well as what you truly need to know about GPR.
GPR Uses X-rays
A common myth surrounding GPR is that it utilizes x-ray technology to find and identify objects underneath the ground. This is a common myth due to the fact that it is simply what people are quick to expect when they first learn about GPR. And although GPR does use electromagnetic waves, x-rays are not something they use. Instead, as previously stated, it uses high frequency radio signals to both receive and store data about what is underneath.
GPR Does Not Work with Water
Another myth is that GPR cannot work and detect through water. However, GPR works perfectly fine with freshwater, especially if that water comes in the form of ice or snow which provide more favorable conditions for GPR to work and thrive in. However, GPR cannot work in saltwater, because it does not allow GPR to work properly under this condition.
You Can See Perfectly with GPR
One of the most common misconceptions surrounding GPR is that it can paint a clear image of what is underneath the surface it is scanning. This could not be further from the truth. For starters, GPR can only detect and not identify objects. For example it can tell if an object is a metal, but it cannot tell what the metal object is. Also, when an object is detected, it shows up as a series of curves on the screen that then must be interpreted to determine what exactly the object is. Sometimes an object underneath the surface cannot even actually be detected because there is the possibility that an appropriate amount of radar wave energy was not returned to the GPR.
